Prime Minister Le Minh Hung hosted a reception for UN Resident Coordinator Pauline Tamesis and heads of the UN agencies in Vietnam on October 23, marking the 81 founding anniversary of the United Nations.

The Prime Minister  was quoted by the Government News as reiterating at the reception that Vietnam treasures the UN's central and irreplaceable role in global governance, while highly appreciating the achievements of extensive and substantive cooperation between Vietnam and the UN over nearly 50 years since the nation joined the organization.

Vietnam would continue to make active and responsible contributions to UN efforts to promote peace, cooperation and sustainable development, including participating in UN peacekeeping operation and promoting the initiative for an International Decade of Culture for Sustainable Development, the Prime Minister said.

Vietnam will continue supporting efforts to reform the UN; implementing the UN Common Premises; and working with the organization to establish a Regional Counter Cybercrime Hub for Asia-Pacific in Vietnam, noted the leader.

The Prime Minister called on UN agencies to leverage their specialized expertise and global partner networks to help Vietnam access knowledge and resources, provide policy and legal advisory support, and promote cooperation in science, technology and innovation.

He urged the UN to help Vietnam access and gradually master strategic technologies and participate more deeply in global AI governance mechanisms.

The Prime Minister suggested the UN work alongside Vietnam in developing a green and circular economy, ensuring energy security and promoting a just energy transition as well as support the nation to build a workforce equipped to meet the demands of the digital age; formulate policies to address population aging; advance green transition and climate change adaptation; and promote smart and sustainable agriculture, among other priorities.

Both sides should promptly finalize the Vietnam–UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2027–2031, ensuring alignment with Vietnam's development orientations, the Prime Minister suggested

The UN Resident Coordinator, for her part, described Vietnam as an increasingly important, proactive and constructive multilateral partner, noting its remarkable transformation from an aid recipient into an active contributor to the UN.

She hailed the nation's pioneering role in efforts to reform the organization and its active participation in digital transformation and global artificial intelligence governance, stressing that the UN stands ready to work alongside the country in its new phase of development.

Both sides vowed to join hands in organizing practical and meaningful activities in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Vietnam's accession to the UN in 2027.
