Authorities in central Quang Tri province are moving forward with plans to establish a pilot free trade zone designed to capitalize on the province's strategic location and strengthen its role as the country's central regional trade and logistics hub.
At a recent meeting, the Provincial Steering Committee overseeing the project reviewed the first draft of the feasibility study prepared by consultants. The proposal envisions an integrated free trade zone that leverages the advantages of Quang Tri's seaport, airport and its position along the East–West Economic Corridor.
Under the proposed plan, the free trade zone will cover approximately 2,785 hectares and be divided into two key functional zones.
The first functional zone, spanning around 555 hectares, will be located within an urban area and focus on commercial and high-value service activities, urban logistics and a non-tariff zone linked to the Quang Tri Airport which is under construction.
The second functional zone will occupy about 2,230 hectares and is earmarked for high-tech manufacturing, export processing industries and large-scale warehousing and logistics facilities. It will be connected to My Thuy Deep-water Port, allowing the province to maximize its maritime economic advantages while strengthening trade links along the East–West Economic Corridor.
If implemented, the integrated free trade zone is expected to enhance cross-border trade, attract foreign investment, expand logistics services and reinforce Quang Tri's position as a key transportation and commercial hub in central Vietnam.
