Vietnam's transport sector remained a bright spot in the economy during the first half of 2026, driven by rising domestic travel, a rebound in international tourism, and growing demand for freight services supporting production and trade.
According to the National Statistics Office, passenger transport reached 618.9 million trips in June, up 3% from the previous month and 17.4% year-on-year. Passenger traffic totaled 29.4 billion passenger-kms, increasing 3.5% month-on-month and 10% from a year earlier.
In the first six months of the year, carriers transported 3.4 billion passengers, up 18.8% from the same period in 2025, while passenger traffic rose 12.2% to 170.7 billion passenger-kms.
Freight transport also posted solid gains. In June, cargo volume reached 272.1 million tons, up 1.8% from May and 13.2% year-on-year. Freight traffic totaled 55.7 billion ton-kms, increasing 2.2% month-on-month and 6% from a year earlier. During the first half, total cargo volume climbed 13.2% to 1.62 billion tons, while freight traffic rose 10% to 321.2 billion ton-kms.
International travel also continued to recover, with Vietnam welcoming about 12.3 million foreign visitors in the first six months, up 14.9% year-on-year. Air arrivals accounted for 82.6% of the total, followed by land crossings at 15.7% and sea arrivals at 1.7%.
